Counseling in Grand Rapids, MI

You woke up today with that familiar heaviness, the soul crushing space of aloneness. On the surface, you are the strong one. The capable one. The person who holds it all together. Inside, your body is tired in a way that sleep cannot fix.

That exhaustion is not failure. It is your nervous system finally speaking the truth: “I cannot keep doing this alone”.

You are ready for a real change

You've done everything right. You've tried the meditation, the gym, the "self-care." You've read the books and listened to the podcasts. But none of it touches the core—the part of you that still feels responsible for everyone's emotional temperature, the part that spirals into self-doubt after a simple disagreement, the part that feels utterly alone even in a room full of people who love you.

You are not broken. You are not too much. Your nervous system is simply overworked from carrying a weight that was never yours to bear alone.

My name is Rachel, and I Can Help

Dr. Rachel Duhon, Licensed Professional Counselor in Grand Rapids Specializing in Brainspotting for Complex Trauma, Brainspotting Intensives, and Couple’s Therapy

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Grand Rapids, MI and I help strong, capable people like you find their way back to themselves. Not by trying harder, but by finally listening to what your body has been trying to tell you all along.

You learned to be the strong one because it was how you survived. It was the brilliant, necessary strategy that kept you safe when safety felt fragile. But the strategies that once protected you are now the very walls keeping you from true connection.

Together, we don't fight these patterns. We listen to the wisdom that created them. We work with your body's innate knowing to gently dismantle those old defenses, not by force, but by understanding. This is how you finally come home to yourself—no longer performing strength, but resting in it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Counseling in
Grand Rapids

  • Being in therapy is always your choice! You get to decide how long you want to be in therapy. Therapy is unique to each person. If you are looking to work through the issues, then therapy lasts until you feel those issues are resolved….or until you feel you have reached a space that is better than where you were at. You do not have to stay in therapy until an issue is resolved. It is ok to take a break, enjoy what you have accomplished in your therapy work, and come back when you are ready! One thing to consider: If choose to incorporate Brainspotting into your therapy work, the overall time can be significantly reduced.

  • Therapy sessions run anywhere from 45-53 minutes. If you choose a Brainspotting Intensive, we decide the time frame together. They can run anywhere from 2-8 hours, or can even span multiple days.

  • In the first session, you will share your story. It is always your choice how much you share, but please know that no detail is too small. Everything that was or is in your life is important. I ask a ton of questions, because I want to try and get the biggest picture possible of who you are and what has been a part of your life experiences. During the first session, we will also identify your goals, what you hope to get out of therapy.

In our initial meeting, you will decide if I am a good fit for you. Do you feel that I can connect with you? Do you feel heard and understood? Do you feel I am competent to handle what is happening in your life? It is also the time for me to evaluate whether think I am the best fit for you.

  • The only way to figure that out is to meet me for a session. I would describe myself as an interactive and straightforward therapist. I use humor and talk a lot with my hands. I like to use visualizations and metaphors to emphasize a point. I sometimes cannot remember what a word is…. or I will say a word wrong! I am very passionate about helping you understand the story in your nervous system and brain, so you walk away from our work together feeling confident in your ability to navigate your inner and external world.

  • Making the decision to see a therapist is a big deal. You might feel a bit nervous, even after you have scheduled your first appointment. Therapy is a process that you and I go through together. I am here to listen, to help you understand and map out how your body responds to stressors, to help you recognize the patterns throughout your life. You are ultimately the person who makes all the decisions on what we do, how we go about creating change, and what is needed for you to move forward. I will support your unique path. I will ask questions – tough ones at times, but all from the basis of respect.

  • That really is up to you. Some people find it easy to say what they feel. For others, it is a lot harder. If talking about emotions is hard for you, we find different ways to explore what is going on in your life. Brainspotting does not require a conversation to happen between us and is profoundly effective in healing and releasing what is stuck inside of us.

  • Yes. I am in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, United Health Care, and Aetna.
